Mr. Cholette began teaching fifth grade and providing Extended Day Care at St. Joseph Catholic School in 2003. He served as assistant principal from 2004 to 2011. Michael co-chaired St. Joseph School’s initial accreditation with New England Association of Schools and Colleges in 2004 and its reaccreditation in 2014. He has served on NEASC accreditation team visits to Catholic schools in the Arch Diocese of Boston.
Mr. Cholette is a member of St. Joseph Church where he is a Eucharist Minister and has served on the St. Joseph Parish Council 2008-2015. Michael has served on the search committees for St. Joseph School Principals in 2009 and 2014. Michael was the St. Joseph School representative at the 150th anniversary of the Sisters of the Congregation of Jesus and Mary in Hawaii in June, 2009. He made a pilgrimage to Molokai where he walked in the footsteps of Joseph De Vuester, better known as St. Damien, a priest of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Following the visit he wrote a current history of St. Joseph School and Parish. Michael was St. Joseph School's "Baycoast Bank's "Teacher of the Year" nominee in September, 2017.
Previously, Mr. Cholette taught fourth grade for seven years, and was the administrative assistant to the principal for six years at a U. S. Dept. of Education Blue Ribbon Award Catholic elementary school in Florida. Michael served as Admissions Director, Sports Director, Food Program Manager, Coordinator of Altar Servers, as well as the liason between the school and church. Mr. Cholette received the “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers Award.”
Michael is a graduate of UMASS-Dartmouth and Bishop Stag High School. He is certified as an elementary teacher in the state of Massachusetts and formerly in Florida. For six summers he was a Group Counselor Coordinator at Cathedral Camp in Freetown. In addition, he worked in special education, and in a parish CCD program. Mr. Cholette has tutored students at the elementary, middle school, and high school level, as well as students with special needs.
He lives in New Bedford, reads when he can, and has researched his family’s history. Michael enjoys travel, spending time with his and Godson, niece, and nephew, as well as outings with his dogs Reilly and Snowy.
