2020-21 FIFTH GRADE SCIENCE REPORT ASSIGNMENT DUE DATES
Although we are not having a science fair this year, learning to write a report, prepare a board and prepare to meet with judges is an important step before becoming a middle school student. Therefore, fifth grade will learn to do these things so they will be able to do it next year!
Please read the assignments and due dates listed below. Please be advised that due dates are subject to change with changes to the school's schedule (i.e. snow days). Post a copy at home to refer to often. The students have been given a copy. Refer to the handouts and grading rubric to judge how well your report/ project complies with the grading criteria. Written work for the report/ project must be written in the child's language. Students will be guided through the project and learn what original work is defined as.
Thursday 11/5 A plan is due telling what your experiment will be, who will help you with the project, how you will gather information on the topic, and how you will work on it.
Thursday 11/12 The Statement of the Problem and the Hypothesis are due.
The Problem is a question stating what you are testing. The Hypothesis is a statement telling what you think will happen with a scientific reason why you think that will happen. I think ______________, therefore___________.
Tuesday 11/24 Materials and Procedure are due.
List materials to be used in the experiment in bullet form/ explain what you will do in chronological (numbered) step-by-step fashion.
Monday 12/7 Background Research is due.
Students should locate factual information on the topics of their project in books, articles, journals, and on the Internet. Notes should be two plus pages typed, 3 plus pages handwritten. Keep the name/details of the sources for the bibliography.
Monday 12/21 Bibliography is due
This is a list of the materials used in research using the proper form and alphabetical order. At least 3 types of sources & 5 sources are given. Consider using WWW.Citationmachine.net
to prepare the bibliography.
Thursday 1/7 Observations are due.
Describe what you saw, heard, felt, smelled, tasted if appropriate to your project in paragraph form. The data sheet(s) of your experiment/records/photos should be included. Paragraphs describe the variables (control, dependent and independent variables) used in your experiment. “Example: The variable I used for my experiment was plant growth in different lights. One plant was in complete sunlight; the other in complete darkness…”
Tuesday 1/12 Results are due.
A detailed interpretation of the observations recorded during the science experiment. This should be at least a half page written response and may include visual explanations such as graphs and charts. Include Additional Research completed after the initial Background Research.
Friday 1/10 Conclusions are due.
Detailed paragraphs sum up the entire project. Should be at least 1-2 paragraphs in length.
Thursday 1/16 Report is due, Science Board is due and Presentations will be scheduled
Students will be asked to turn in three copies of their report. One copy is for the teacher to grade; one is for the display table, and one is for the student to prepare for the oral presentation in class. Students may make 2 photocopies if the original is handwritten.
The Actual School Science Fair will be scheduled by the middle school science teacher.
