What is an Acceptable Science Fair Project Topic?
A science fair project is an investigation or experiment that uses the
scientific method to learn the answer to a scientific problem and question.
The scientific method is a series of steps and a process of thinking that scientists use
to guide them to find answers to scientific questions. We will review these steps in class.
There must be a scientific explanation for the answer to the problem and question.
Remember to pick a project/ experiment that is appropriate to your interest and ability level.
Science Fair Regulations prohibit the use of live animals,hazardous/ flammable/ explosive chemicals,
breakable containers and stipulate all safety precautions be taken.
*Will you be able to conduct the experiment?
*Will you be able to explain what happens in a scientific way?
*Will you be able to find all the materials to conduct the experiment?
*Will you be able to follow the Scientific Method with this experiment?
*Will you have enough time to conduct the experiment , i.e. plant growth?
*Will you be able to find materials for research and background information?
So, a research project, demonstration, model, survey, or taste-test are not science projects
because they are not experiments and do not use the scientific method.
Racing cars down a ramp is not a science project, but
.......... testing surface friction and the speed of racing cars on a ramp using different surfaces could be an experiment.
Watching a plant grow is not a science project, but
.......testing growth of plants in different soil/moisture conditions with a scientific explanation could be a science project.
Explaining photosynthesis is not a science fair project, but
..................... testing the affect of a plant’s exposure to sunlight would become an experiment.
Building a model of a volcano is not a science experiment, but
.......... different chemical reactions and the height of their eruptions may become a science project.
Making different paper airplanes may not be a science experiment, but
....... testing different designs and testing stream lined wingspan design and air forces may become a science project.
Examining liquid densities may not be a science project, but
........ testing types of lubricants on gears and friction reduction could become an experiment.
Making a model of a battery or electro magnet may not be a science experiment, but
........... testing different materials in their construction in relation to power output could become an experiment.
Demonstrating soil erosion is not an experiment, but
............. testing methods to reduce erosion may become an experiment.
A rock collection is not an experiment, but
....... testing a sample of rocks/their qualities - luster, hardness etc. and suitability for certain uses may be an experiment.
Remember, your topic must be an experiment and be approved. Good luck in selecting your topic!
